Shopping
Suzhou shopping is
limited compared to Shanghai. However, if you are looking
for calligraphy tools, painting, writing brushes or silk,
you have come to the right place. All of these items are readily
available on many of the main shopping streets. For good quality
items at competitive rates, shopping along Shiquan Jie, east
off Ren Min Lu, is your best choice.
Silk
Although there
are numerous opportunities to go shopping for silk in Suzhou,
be ware of outrageous prices, especially in the boutiques
along Shiquan Jie and Guanyin Jie and the night market of
Shi Lu. Bargain hard as these sellors often quote prices up
to five times the going rate.
Antiques
The Antique Store
(open daily 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.) along Renmin Lu and Ganjiang
Dong Lu is the place to find old furniture, while paintings
and embroidery are on hand in pavilion near the corner of
Renmin Lu and Baita Xi Lu and in the shops along Shiquan Jie.
Clothings
For clothes, try
shops on Guan Qian Jie and Shi Qian Jie. If you prefer to
have custom made clothes, most cloth shops have tailors on
duty, who can make simple clothing in about three days. Prices
for tailors start at 50 Yuan (excluding the materials).
CDs & DVDs
The best place
to buy CDs, VCDs and DVDs are David's Rockstation in ZhuHui
Lu and also the shop on Shi Qian Jie opposite the Suzhou Hotel.
Here you have a large selections to choose from and a staff
generally speak English. If you buy DVDs in small shops, insist
to test the quality of the film first, as some of the DVDs
are made poorly.
